Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 23/05/2016

CUNNINGHAM, J D (1847: 755) draws the attention of cave diggers to the »excavated caves« (man-made rock chambers) which have been cut from the relatively soft sandstone of the »Oodeghir« (Udayagiri, also: Udaigir, Udaya Giri) range of hills west of Betwa River and about 3 km from Vidisha (note 1). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1847: The largest« of the "caves" on Udayagiri at Vidisha, Videsha, Bhilsa, Bhelsa town »is dedicated to Shiva, is 17 or 18 feet (5.2 or 5.5 m] square, with four pillars … This temple contains a Sanskrit inscription … that gives a date, viz. 1093 Sumbut [Samvat]« (CUNNINGHAM, J D 1847: 755). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1875: Not seen ROUSSELET, T L (1875) is said to describe from »nella valle di Bhilsa, India centrale, la caverna di Mahadeva dedicata al dio Shiva e riporta qualche schizzo degli ingressi di alcune di queste cavità« (ROUSSELET, T L 1877).
