SITUATION: On the top of the hill at Umga, a village about 2.5 km west of the Madanpur (note 1) on the National Highway NH2 (Grand Trunk Road). CULTURAL HISTORY: For a few years past (since the discovery of an image of Sri Gaurishankara in a cave on the top of it, this peak has been named Gaurishankara Hill. […] The images of the gods, the consecration of whose temples is mentioned in this inscription [note 2], are still seen, some lying in or near the ruined temples, and others placed in a cavern on the top of the hill (DAYAL, P 1906: 23).
