Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A black & white photograph (complete with two boys for scale), which is credited to Kishore Murthy (2006 May 01), is associated with a certain Achalu Betta (apparently the name of a hill near Bangalore) and shows a view from a standpoint just inside a cave or rock shelter, which is nearly triangular in cross-section, and formed beneath rather large and somewhat roundish boulders (granite?, gneiss?) leaning against each other. Visible in the distance is a neighbouring hill and an apparently level country beyond and below. ETYMOLOGY: -Achalu Betta- seems to translate as Hills Hill as -achalu- derives from the Sanskrit -achala- (hill, mountain), the ending -lu- indicates plural, and -betta- is the most common of the Kannada words for a hill (note 1). SITUATION (Kishore Murthy 2006 May 01, Internet, accessed 2010.12.22): At an unidentified location high up on a hill which rises somewhere in the vicinity of Bangalore (12°59'N: 77°35'E).A black & white photograph (complete with two boys for scale), which is credited to Kishore Murthy (2006 May 01), is associated with a certain Achalu Betta (apparently the name of a hill near Bangalore) and shows a view from a standpoint just inside a cave or rock shelter, which is nearly triangular in cross-section, and formed beneath rather large and somewhat roundish boulders (granite?, gneiss?) leaning against each other.
