Description
»Gangapur Caves« next to the symbol W for »cave temple« is shown on a Tourist map of Andhra Pradesh (note 1). Since this »cave temple« (note 2) represents a sight-seeing spot, which tourists are expected to visit, the "caves" (or so) at Peddireddipalle are suspected to be of historical or religious importance and to consist either of one (or more) natural sacred caves (temple caves) or man-made rock chambers (cave temples) used for religious purposes. SITUATION 1: AMS sheet NE44-01 Chanda (U502 series, 1959 edition) shows the village of »Gangapur« near N19°16': E079°27' (±5 km) at a distance of about 20 km in a direct line approximtely south-east of »Asafabad« or Asifabad (note 3) in a tributary valley south of the Pedda Vagu or Pedda Vaga and north of Warangal on the railway line via Tandur (N19°09': E079°28') and Sirpur (N19°29': E079°36') to Chandrapur (N19°57': E079°18'). SITUATION 2: GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, Tourist map (1973) shows »Gangapur Caves« (without coordinates) north of Warangal (N18°00': E079°35': 263 m asl), north of the river Godavari, and some 10 km (or so) north of Tandur (N19°09': E079°28': 307 m asl) on the Warangal (N18°00': E079°35') - Chandrapur (N19°57': E079°18' Maharashtra) line of the South Central Railway. SITUATION 3: SURVEY of INDIA (1978): Andhra Pradesh (1: 1 mill. Stete Map series) shows no Gangapur (or so) north of »Tandur 307« on the »SCR« (South Central Railway) from »Warangal 263« northwards. SITUATION 4: The India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 94 B1) shows in Adilabad district no Gangapur (or so) north of »Tandur 307« on the »SCR« (South Central Railway) from »Warangal 263« northwards. GEOLOGICAL SITUATION: »Adilabad district … The geological formations include include the Archaean gneiss, the Cuddapah, Sullavai and Gondwana series, and the Deccan trap« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 5: 22). »Sirpur Tandur (also known as the Amaldari).-- Formerly a subdistrict in the Bidar Division of Hyderabad State, lying between 19°0' and 19° 56' N. and 77°53' and 80°0' E. … The Sahyadriparvat or Satmala range traverses the sub-district from the north-west to the south-east for about 175 miles [282 km] … The geological formations are the Archaean Gneiss; the Cuddapah [sandstones and limestones], Sullavai, and Gondwana series, the latter including Talcher [Talchir], Barakar, Kamptee, Kota - Maleri, and Chikiala beds; and the Deccan trap (W. KING, Memoirs, Geological Survey of India, vol. xviii, pt. iii)« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 23: 40). HARI NARAIN (1987 figure 9) gives a tiny »Gravity and geology map of the Godavari Rift« (after QURESHY et al. 1968) where »Pakhal« -- the proterozoic sediments of the Pakhal Group (SUBBA RAJU et al. 1978) -- and »Gondwana« occurs near N19°15': E079°30' (±10 km).
