Description
A group of man-made, rock-cut chambers, which were used for religious purposes, reports IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 21: 283) from »Rewah State (Riwa) … At Mara, the Muri of the maps [note 1], are three groups of caves called the Buradan, Chhewar, and Ravan. They date from the fourth to ninth century, and some of them are ornamented with rough sculptures.«
NOTE 1: »Mara, the Muri of the maps« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 21: 283) is not listed in IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 25: 353) but positioned Mara 23°54'N: 82°30'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 57 F4) and marked »Mara« near 23°53'30”N: 82°30'30”E and about 3 kmor 4 km approximately north of Muri near 23°51'N: 82°31'E on AMS sheet NF44-04 Ambikapur (U502 series, 1962 edition).
