Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 17/04/2016

GRIERSON, G A (1903: 71) refers to a Manipuri legend according to which the ancestors came from the earth (keyword: emergence cave) at a place called Maikel and marked with a stone. Concerning the marking stone, compare the –>Murringphy Cave.MILLS, J P (1922: XX) mentions a legend which »traces the two divisions of the Angami tribe, the Kepezoma and the Kepepfüma, to two brothers who emerged from the bowels of the earth at Mekrima (Maikel).« SITUATION: Unknown. »Maikel« (GRIERSON, G A 1903: 71) or »Mekrima (Maikel)« (MILLS, J P 1922: XX) seems to be the village indicated as »Makhremei Makhel« near N25°29': E094°10' (AMS sheet NG46-11 Kohima, U592 series, 1956 edition), which lies some 90 km along the National Highway (NH 39) north of Imphal (N24°49': E093°57') and 32 km along the same road (about 20 km in a direct line) approximately south of Kohima (N25°40': E094°07') and a kilometre or two southeast of the populated place Tupherna Tadebi (AMS sheet NG46-11) or Tadubi (India Road Atlas, Eicher Goodearth 2006: 47 F3) on the National Highway (NH 39).
