Description
Relatively »many Boodhist caves« if not »22 caves« (note 1) form a »Buddhist group of caves« (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1981-82 / 1984: 97) in the sense of man-made rock chambers (rock temples excavated for Buddhist religious purposes). BURGESS, J (1883: 18-19, plate IX) gives illustrations and a description. SITUATION: Near »Mahad, 53 m. [82.3 km] S.E. of Alibag« (SMITH, G 1882: 258) or, to be precise, at Pala / Pale (note 2), »two miles« (3 km) west-northwest of Mahad (note 3).
