Description
Several »rock shelters« or caves containing rock art (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1968-1969; SUNDARA, A 1968, 1972a, 1972b, 1984a, 1984b) are situated at an unspecified location somewhere in a certain Hire Benkal area (note 1). CULTURAL HISTORY -- rock art: One of the largest paintings depicts a number of horse riders, man dancing in groups, and animal figures. Shelter no. 2, which is also contains rock art, yielded several fluted cores of chert and a sherd of platter of the neolithic grey ware painted in red ochre on the rim. Neolithic grey ware and megalithic black and white ware were found in shelter no. 6.
NOTE 1: »Hire Benkal« is not identified but lies somewhere in Raichur (Raijur) district (town at 16°12'N: 77°22'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). There is a populated place »Hira« N16°12': E76°49' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NE43-16 Raichuer (U502 series, 1962 edition) and one Hare Kotankal indicated in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 100 C5).
