Description
»The entrance to a large cave [note 1] formed in the same manner as the preceeding [note 2]« is indicated as »Cave (7) Coal 4'« (cave, 7th site, coal 1.2 m thick) on the »Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau, Lakadong Coal-Field, Jaintia Hills, Scale 400 ft = 1 Inch« (circa 1: 4800) »On transfer paper by Rahmatullah Khan« in LATOUCHE (1890 plate). IDENTITY: Unknown but »Cave (7) Coal 4'« (LATOUCHE 1890) seems to lie pretty close to (or, perhaps, at the same spot) as the entrance to Krang –>Rynsong, Umlatdoh, where a 4 m or 5 m descent intersected in February 2014 a limestone cave which Hindu religion workers had modified into a temple cave sacred to Shiva. SITUATION: On the »plateau, called Umlotodo, on which the village of Lakadong stands« (LATOUCHE 1890: 14) and about 200 m in a direct line south-west from Lakadong, the »Village of Lakadog [sic!]« (LATOUCHE 1890 plate: Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau). CULTURAL HISTORY - human use coal mine: »(7) … Here also the coal is exposed at the entrance to a large cave formed in the same manner as the preceeding; there are two seams, divided by about 18 inches [46 cm] of carbonaceous shale; the upper is 1 foot [30 cm] thick and the lower 4 feet [1.2 m], but they quickly thin out horizontally and disappear altogether« (LATOUCHE 1890: 15).
NOTE 1: Not mentioned by OLDHAM, T (1859: 99-210). NOTE 2: The 2nd –>Lakadong Cave (Latouche 1890) gave the impression of having been »formed by the falling in of the underlying limestone« (LATOUCHE 1890: 15).
