Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

No locally known name has been identified for a cave entrance and pothole, which, because an abandoned lorry tyre had been discarded somehow, was recorded as Krem Tyre 1, 25°21'27.0”: 92°31'24.5”, is this the big one to Wah Shikar ? (Arbenz, T 2004.02.19 Mss). IDENTITY: Arbenz, T (2008 Mss -Fieldbook- page 103) refers from Krem Tyre 1/2/3 to Krem Mulieh 1/2/3 (page 69) where, however, the three-fold Krem Tyre 1/2/3 is not mentioned (note 1). According to Arbenz, T (2008.12.23 personal correspondence: Re: Krem Tyre), the three Tyre Caves are identical with the three caves (note 2) of Krem –>Mulieh, Krem –>Mulieh 2, and Krem –>Mulieh 3, which had been called Krem –>Moulieh (Brooks 2004), Krem –>Muhlieh (Brooks 2005), Krem –>Mulieh (Jarratt 2004), and Krem –>Muhlieh (Sheen 2003). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -u tyra- and Bengali -nolbas- is a species of small bamboo (SINGH, N 1906: 240) but the so-called Krem Tyre 1/2/3 (Arbenz, T 2008 Mss -Fieldbook- 103) stands for three distict -Tyre Cave- which have been nicknamed in honour of a lorry's tyre, the rubber covering, typically inflated or surrounding an inflated inner tube, placed around a wheel to form a flexible contact with the road (note 3). The English -lorry tyre- translates easily into the Khasi expression [ka] jri kaba sop ïa ka shalyntem ne shaka motor kit mar (BLAH, E 2007: 175, 317): The rubber which covers / thatches the wheel of a motorised vehicle carrying goods / articles. SITUATION: In a streambed (without identified local name) at an unexplainable location somewhere in the vicinity of the village of Shnongrim. POSITION: According to the disputable GPS positions, which had been recorded without recognising the measurement's horizontal position errors, the three Tyre Caves lie about 190 m in a direct line approximately north-west from the cave entrances called Krem –>Mulieh (Moolieh, Moulieh, Muhlieh). The first Tyre Cave lies at linear distances of 64 m approximately WNW (-56.0 m east, 30.9 m north) fom Tyre Cave 2 and 60 m approximately west (58.8 m east, 9.3 m north) from Tyre Cave 3.om Tyre Cave 2 and 60 m approximately west (58.8 m east, 9.3 m north) from Tyre Cave 3.
