Location

-- From Louang Phrabang take the main road towards Vang Vieng. After half an hour by car (approximately 25 km) take the untarred road towards Muang Nan. Follow this road for another about 40 minutes (35 km) until the ”Agro-Forestry Research Station” sign on the right is reached. Don’t take the road leading off but continue straight ahead. After about 50 minutes one passes the village of Ban Phôngdâng. Continue straight ahead. Take the next untarred road leading off to the right which leads to Ban Thali. A display ”Tham Thia Cave” is placed here. Follow this road for about 4 minutes until a parking area is reached. The start of the footpath to Tham Tia is about 1 minute drive further down the road. A sign pointing towards Tham Gnai has been placed at the car park. The footpath to the cave entrance is reached in about five minutes after a steep ascent in the forest [5158] Map sheet: E47-024 Methode: GPS DREYBRODT JOERG - 23/06/2024

History: Explo history: -- 14-16.11.2000 explored and surveyed to 1433 m by Amis Laos Expedition 2000 (NL) [5158] Cave description: Citation: Analysis: [5158]: Tham Gnai is a big horizontal cave system with many chambers and passages and fine calcite decorations. The main passage goes straight through the mountain for about 700 metres to exit on its other side. However, this exit is merely a narrow crack and too small for people of average size to exit the cave. The general direction of the cave is north-south with the main entrance located at the southern end. Most of the side passages do not continue for much more than 50 metres. After walking through several big chambers and spacious tunnels one arrives at a 30 metres long crawl – the only part of the main passage that does not allow walking upright. The crawl is followed by a large chamber with pretty formations followed by a 3.5 m deep hole in a floor that has to be crossed to reach an enormous chamber with huge formations that are partly eroded. From here the gallery decreases to a moderate size and leads to the northern exit >> survey >> shown in map [8525]: only fauna records [5128]: >> survey >> shown in map Equipment: Remarks:depth -19/+25 m References: [5128]: Damen, F., Eskes, D., Burgers, J., Meijer, P. & Damen, F. sr. 2003: Amis Laos Caving Expedition 2000.
