An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) in laterite (note 1) is said to give access to the cave at Nelli-teertha … a natural cave partially modified by human interventions (geokarnataka.blogspot.com accessed 2012.10.25). ETYMOLOGY: The Sanskrit (Hindi, etc.) -tirtha- is the word for a ford and steps to a river, or, figuratively, a place of pilgrimage. The association with -nelli- (note 2) is unclear but may derive from -nila- (Sanskrit) dark. On the other hand, the Kannada and Tamil -nellikkai- (also: nellikkaai or nellikaayi) is the word for the Indian gooseberry or -aamla- (Hindi, Gujarati), -amla- (Oriya), -awla- (Marathi), etc., from -amalika- (Sanskrit), botanically Phyllanthus emblica L (synonyms: Cicca emblica Kurz; Emblica officinalis Gaertn.; Mirobalanus embilica Burm.; Phyllanthus mairei Lév.), a deciduous tree of the Phyllanthaceae family.
