Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 24/07/2016

»A bedding cave about 9 metres long, 2.5 m wide and 0.9 m high, formed at the base of a relatively massive bed of limestone. An excellent vein boxwork structure on its roof indicates its phreatic origins, as do a series of small joint controlled avens; one aven has stalctites [speleothems] around its base though they are now completely dry« (WALTHAM 1971d: 44). All of the three Jomosom Caves occur in the 400 m thick Jurassic (Lias) Jomosom Limestone (note 1). SITUATION: Somewhere near Jomosom (2743 m asl) at a location about 700 m above the orographically right (western) bank of the Kali Gandaki, and in the south side of the ridge directly north of the town.

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 24/07/2016

NOTE 1: The Jomosom Limestone is thin-bedded and banded (on average 30 cm) with up to 1 metre thick beds of calcareous shale. The limestone has a fine grained, partially recrystallised oolitic structure, and contains about 25% of patchily distributed dolomite. Fossil fragments of variable size constitute about 10% of the rock, and a 14% insoluble content consists of small, angular, well-graded quartz and chert grains (WALTHAM 1971d: 43).
