Description
Man-made 'cave temples' (rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) at »Selarvadi« or Shelarvadi (note 1), locally called Ghorvadi (horse village?) caves, described HICKMAN (1876: 252-253) and placed by KOSAMBI (1960b: 28) on the ancient »Paüna valley trade route [note 2] … leading [ from Pagne, note 3] past Tungi [note 4] to Susdhagad passes [note 5] and Chaul [note 6] harbour) that touched the ['caves' at] Bedsa [note 7] and Selarvadi …«
NOTE 1: »Selarvadi« (KOSAMBI 1960a) is the small town and railway station Shelarvadi / Shelarwadi N18°42': E073°43' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) indicated as »Shelarwadi« on AMS sheet NE43-06 Poona (U502 series, 1960 edition) but not shown on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 90 C2) about 20 km north-west of Pune (Poona). NOTE 2: The river »Paüna« (KOSAMBI 1959; 1960a; 1962, 1982, 1993: 14) is indicated as »Pauna River« on AMS sheet NE43-06 Poona (U502 series, 1960 edition) and joins --as Pauna River and Pavna River (N18°34': E073°50' nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) the Indravati at the village of Chikhali, which lies some 7 km in a direct line approximately south-east of Dehu (N18°43': E073°46') and 20 km north of Pune (Poona, N18°32': E073°52').
