Description
An unspecified cave of dubious nature (note 1) in granite and »four rock shelters« CHANDRAMOULI (1991: 71-72), which, per adventure, may represent man-made, troglodyte meditation retreat cells? ETYMOLOGY: »The village of Budagavi (Buddhagavi) … derives its name from the cave (Telugu: Gavi, Guha) in the hillock [note 2] to the west of which the present-day village stands« (CHANDRAMOULI 1991: 71-72). SITUATION: »Budagavi is located 6 km [along the road north-west] from Uravakonda [note 3], and 55 km north-west of Anantapur [N14°41': E77°36'], the district headquarters on the highway to Bellary [N15°23': E77°14'].« CULTURAL HISTORY: »Budagavi is known for its historic remains on the top of the granitoid hillock locally known as 'Pedda Konda' (in Telugu: Large Hill), where several man-made terraces, brick stupas, tanks or other structural remains occur. In addition to these microliths, ground and polished artifacts, pottery, rock paintings and bruisings in and around four rock shelters were also discovered« (CHANDRAMOULI 1991: 72).
NOTE 1: Perhaps a natural cave in gravitationally dislocated granite boulders but more likely a man-made rock chamber (rock temple) used for religious purposes. NOTE 2: An isolated hill rising some 150 m from the surrounding plain to 1951 feet (595 m asl) is marked near N14°58': E77°14' (±1 km) on AMS sheet ND43-08 Anantapur (U502 series, 1961 edition) on the left-hand side (east) of the road from Bellary (45 km away near N15°23': E77°14') approximately south to Anantapur (55 km away near N14°41': E077°36'). NOTE 3: Uravakonda N14°57': E77°16' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).
