Description
A man-made Buddhist 'cave temple' (a cluster of rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) dated to 200 BC is managed by the ASI / Archaeological Survey of India, Vadodara Circle (note 1). The rock surfaces expose Pliocene / Pleistocene miliolitic Porbandar Limestone (Miliolite, calcarenite) featuring not only up to 5 cm in diameter large tubular conduits but also laminar marly interbeds issuing calcite laden water depositing rather limited patches of thin flowstone (secondary calcite formation, speleothem). SITUATION: Near the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) inside the Uparkot (upper fort) on the eastern side of Junagadh (old citadel) town.
NOTE 1: Mentioned in IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 14: 238: "Khaprakodia"), noted by WARD (1988: 226-227, with photograph) and described by BURGESS, in his Antiquities of Cutch and Kathiawar.
