Description
Apparently neither a cave nor a hollow (doline) or pit-like hollow (pothole) but a relatively small water-course incised in sandstone which had exposed in 1852 an occurrence of interstratal coal. SITUATION 1852a: In an unspecified spatial relation Close to the [Lakadong] village itself (OLDHAM, T 1859: 145). SITUATION 1852b: Allegedly at a on plan (OLDHAM, T 1859: 145) and thus a) about 200 m or 250 m in a direct line due north of what had been in 1852 the centre of village of Lakadong (covering in 1890 an area of 100 m by 150 m) and b) apparently at the same spot as the funnel-shaped hollow of –>Lakadong 1 (Latouche 1890). CULTURAL HISTORY - human use coal mine: Close to the [Lakadong] village itself (at a on plan) the coal is exposed in a small water-course. It is here about five feet [1.5 m] thick, dipping at a small angle (4° to 6°) towards North by East with the sandstone roof and floor. The roof is of a sharp gritty texture, ferrugineos, quartzose, and hard; white and reddish incolour; irregularly bedded, but firm, and would form an excellent mining roof; under this from twelve to fifteen inches [30 cm to 38 cm] of good coal; then about twelve inches [30 cm] of hard black micaceous shale, difficult to work; then about three feet [0.9 m] of good coal, mixed here and there with sandy masses, similar to those which occur in the lower portion of the Cherra [note 1] coal and at Bairung [note 2] (OLDHAM, T 1859: 145-146).colour; irregularly bedded, but firm, and would form an excellent mining roof; under this from twelve to fifteen inches [30 cm to 38 cm] of good coal; then about twelve inches [30 cm] of hard black micaceous shale, difficult to work; then about three feet [0.9 m] of good coal, mixed here and there with sandy masses, similar to those which occur in the lower portion of the Cherra [note 1] coal and at Bairung [note 2] (OLDHAM, T 1859: 145-146).
