Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

No locally known name has been identified for a more or less vertical cave entrance without identified shape and dimensions, which gives access to a pothole that lies not only in an apparently inexplicale spatial relation (note 1) to the first two entrances to Krem Dngiem (Lumthymme) but anyhow consists of a pothole draining water from west (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss) to the Flowstone Fluted Aven of Krem –>Liat Prah. SITUATION: The 2nd entrance to the Krem Dngiem associated with the village of Lumthymme lies at an inexplicable topographical location and geological situation (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss, confirmed by Arbenz, T 2008 Fieldbook: 24). APPROACH 1 (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss): Starting from 4WD-track Lumthymme - Lumthari at Y-junction to Moolesngi, take the track starting on right-hand side of cowshed, traversing into NW-flank of the Shnongrim Ridge. Leave this track after about 50 m and head down towards lower corner of pine-tree grove. Cross small dry river bed and traverse to seond riverbed nearby. Follow this donstream to get access to about 40 m pitch about Ø 8 m. Bypass pitch on left down rocky steps and 2 m climb. After climb good start for pitch from ledge. APPROACH 2 (Arbenz, T 2008 Fieldbook: 24): Starting at a lone house and cow shed on the col between Lumthymme and Moolasngi (100 m after y-Junction), take the footpath in a north easterly direction to a distinct, square (rectangular?) pine grove. Continue along this path, cross a creek, and ascent a slope. On top of the slope, you reach the head of a creek that flows into the large, two-stepped entrance shaft of the cave. An alternative, safer access route is by crossing the creek and by following it on the left side for a distance of about 10 m. In doing so, a couple of rocky steps down can be negotiated without tackle and the first part of the pitch can be avoided. There is a convenient ledge (rather a balcony with several trees) which serves as a good starting point for the entrance shaft. CAVEDESCRIPTION 1 (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss): An initial 30 m shaft leading to second shaft of 35 m, which is the sparkling flowstone decorated -Flowstone Fluted Aven- in Krem Liat Prah. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Thomas Arbenz, T 2007.11.01 personal correspondence): A small, dry riverbed leads down to the ledge of a Ø10 m pothole which has a ledge 10 m down from the rim. This ledge can be reached by climbing down several short cliffs on the left (facing downstream). [deleted: From the ledge, which is more a balcony with several trees, the pitch can be dropped with 50 m oof rope]. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3 (Arbenz, T 2008 Fieldbook: 24): A clean shaft of large dimensions descends 30 m from a balcony with several trees to a bouldery floor, from where a slighty bendig, smaller shaft descends into the Flowstone Fluted Aven (survey station .16/9) Krem Liat Prah. TACKLE: Either follow ARBENZ (2008 Fieldbook: 24), who suggests to bring two hangers, slings, carbines, and two 40 m ropes, or subscribe to a beief according to which 40 m plus 50 m should be adequate (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss) --for attaining a greater identity of fluorescent whisky jelly? PROSPECTS (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss): Two crawls off base of first pitch were not investigated. SPELEOMETRY: Arbenz, T (2008.01.20 Mss): Krem Dngiem 2 positioned at N25°22'16”: E92°32'05.5”: 933 m asl (WGS84) contributed by March 2007 a survey length of 119.69 m (vertical range: 73.68 m) to the Labit Cave System (Krem –>Liat Prah).ief according to which 40 m plus 50 m should be adequate (McKenzie 2007.02.10 Mss) --for attaining a greater identity of fluorescent whisky jelly?
