Description
NOTE 1: Borra N18°16'45”: E83°02'45” (unspecified geodedic datum probably Everest 1830, KURIEN, T K 1980: 1999; RANGANATHAN K 1968) is indicated »Borra« in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 96 C4). NOTE 2: Survey of India sheet 65-J/16 (edition 1982) shows a hill »Dewodt Munda / Devadu Konda 1645 m« near N18°14'53": E82°57'30" (Everest 1830). The polar coordinates 20 km from Devadimanda hill south-east (on a bearing of 315°) position Nilgalgunta near N°18°11'00": E83°01°20" (Survey of India sheet 65-N/04, not seen) where the anonymous peak 3982 (1214 m) is indicated on the AMS sheet NE44-08 Vizianagaram (U502 series,1963 edition) and the likewise anonymous peak 1214 is shown in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 96 C4.
An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, dimensions, orientation, characteristics) is said to give access to a relatively »small cave« (no size mentioned) »lined with travertine« (secondary calcite deposits, speleothems). SITUATION: Somewhere in the vicinity of the village of Nilgalgunta, which is said to lie about 10 km south-south-east from the village of Borra (note 1) and 10 km south-east from Devadimanda hill (note 2). The southernmost isolated outcrop of crystalline limestone in the gneisses of that hill tract of the Eastern Ghats, occurs at the low saddle above the village of Nilgalgunta. CAVE DESCRIPTION: »There is a small cave here, lined with travertine [flowstone] but without any stalactites or stalagmites; other recesses are said to exist which are now blocked up. The limestone is of grey or dark-green or nearly black coloured, the latter arising from a strong admixture of hornblendic minerals, generally coarsly saccharine, in thick beds having a high dip to E.S.E. [ca. 240°], with an exposed aggregate thickness of about 30 m« (KING, W 1882a: 153).
