Unidentified Kafir Fort & Caves are indicated on Major Wade's map (note 1) south of Syghan (note 3). Captain BURSLEM (1846, chapter II) claims to have passed by (on 2nd July 1840) and describes a deep defile (note 3) in hills composed of sandstone and indurated clay, in which numerous fossils abound but fails to notice any caves (note 4). SITUATION: Major Wade's map shows two roads (bridle paths) from Syghan (Saighan) south to Bamian. -Kafir Fort & Caves- is marked on the eastern road, which runs towards Garow (note 5) and Akrobat (note 6) to Bamian and east of Sukt i Chinar (note 7) on the western Saighan-Bamian road.
