»Some interesting Buddhist caves« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 24: 348) or man-made, rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes are located somewhere at the village of Lohare, adjacent to Wai (note 1). »Wai … on the Kistna river, 20 miles [32 km] north-by-west of Satara town [note 2], and 15 miles [24 km] east of Mahabaleshwar. The caves in the neighbourhood show that it was an early Buddhist settlement, and it is locally identified with the Vairatnagar [note 3] visited by the Pandavas during their exile. … In the adjacent village of Lohare are some interesting Buddhist caves« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 24: 348).
