Description

The suspicious place name »Synrang Kasi« (inhabitable "wild home" + goat, castrated he-goat) is indicated on the Survey of India Half-Inch series sheet 83-C/SW (edition 1922) near (±1 km) N25°23'55”: E092°17'05” (WGS84 modified from Everest 1830) and in the upper reaches of a tributary (no name shown) from the south-east to the Myntdu River at a spot that lies A) from Jowai (Circuit House near ±250 m N25°26'47”: E092°11'28” WGS84) about 10 km in a direct line approximately south-east B) from Khliehriat (N25°21'15”: E092°17'25” WGS84) at a linear distance of 11 km or 12 km approximately north-west C) from Bopung (N25°25'00”: E92°18'30”) about 4 km along a footpath WSW. ETYMOLOGY: The origin of the Synteng Khasi place name »Synrang Kasi« (note 1) has not yet been discovered but "ka synrang" tends to signify something along the lines of an inhabitable wild home (note 2) and "Kasi" (Survey of India 1922 toposheet 83-C/SW) seems to be a version of the Nepali loanword (note 3) "u khasi" for »a male goat; a billy goat« or, to be precise, "u 'langkhasi" (a contraction of "u blang" + khasi) for »a kind of goat« (SINGH, N 1906: 203) or, to be uncensored, »a castrated he-goat« (note 4). Another etymology interprets "kasi" as a contraction of "ka 'si", a short form of either "ka masi", »a cow« or of ”ka ksi”, »the head vermin« (SINGH, N 1906: 201).

NOTE 1: Survey of India, Half-Inch series toposheet 83-C/SW (edition 1922). NOTE 2: "ka synrang" (Khasi, noun) has not only been translated as »the coping of a rock or cave« (SINGH, N 1906: 216) or »cave« (SINGH, N 1920: 63) and »refuge« (SINGH, N 1920: 428) but also as »nest« (BLAH, E 2007: 198). The word seems to signify an inhabitable cave, rock shelter or den, especially the "hole" or lair of an animal and the hideout of a "runaway" (fairy, freedom fighter, hermit, king, madman, robber, terrorist, etc.). NOTE 3: The persons who make a living from keeping livestock in Meghalaya are East Pahari (Nepali) speaking immigrants from Nepal (personal observation).
