A cave, which was once used to hide food supplies in times of social insecurity, is mentioned in the expedition log by Lieutenant WOODTHORPE, R G (1873 / 1978: 213) of the Royal Engineers: On the 27th [January 1872] … a large quantity of rice, beans, yams, etc., in big baskets was discovered in a cave near Kungnung … (note 1). SITUATION: Kungnung was approached from one station No. 10 which was put up at a place about three miles and a half (about 5.6 km on foot) from Chepui (Chiahpui N24°01': E93°08') on the banks of a little stream Sairumlai (note 2) via station No. 11 on the Gnaupa ridge (Ngopa ridge), near the site of an old village called Bohmong (note 3) and was reached by crossing a stream called Tuila and by contouring along the east face of the hill on the way (in northwards?) to Surklang (Surtlang N23°53': E93°17': 6618 feet = 2017 m asl).
