Description
An »odd natural« sacred cave, »which is reached by a passage through the hill some 10 metres long, and it is about three metres in diameter. Out of it lead two other chambers accessible with the help of a ladder« (FRANCIS, W 1907 edited 1992: 243). SITUATION: About 3 km west of Garugubilli (note 1), a village about 8 km north of Chipurupalle (note 2), the headquarters of the taluk and a railway station, where there: »is a hill with three peaks, in the northernmost of which, Devudukonda, is an odd natural cave which is reached by a passage through the hill some 10 metres long, and it is about three metres in diameter. Out of it lead two other chambers accessible with the help of a ladder« (FRANCIS, W 1907 edited 1992: 243). CULTURAL HISTORY -- temple cave: »In this cave is a stone which is supposed to be a lingam, and in the month of Kartigam [note 3] people flock to do puja to it« (FRANCIS, W 1907 edited 1992: 243).
NOTE 1: »Garugubilli (83° 38', 18° 22') is 5 miles north of Chipurupalle on the Calcutta railway. Two miles to the west is a three-peaked hill, in the most northerly of which, Devudukonda, is a cave for which a ladder is required« (CRAVEN, S A 1969).
