A fabulous underground water-course flows rythmically every twelve years from the sacred Ganges river to a man-made water reservoir at Kumbakonam (note 1). »Kumbakonam City (Sanskrit, kumbha, 'water-pot', and ghona, 'nose', old Tamil, kundandai) … situated in N10°58': E079°22' on the banks of the Cauvery, with a station on the main line of the South Indian Railway, 194 miles from Madras. … The Mahamagham festival once in twelve years attracts an immense concourse of visitors from all parts ofIndia.It is the popular belief that on this occasion the Mahamagham tank [water reservoir] receives a direct supply of water from the Ganges by underground ways.
