Description
An unspecified sacred cave (temple cave) associated with the rishi Markandeya contains an image of Vishnu (ATKINSON 1882, vol. 11 edited 1991, 2: 342). Compare the cave of –>Vamana at Deoprayag. SITUATION: At a travelling distance of about 60 km along the National Highway NH58 from Rishikesh approximately east to Srinagar (Garhwal) and near the sacred sites (including Pradyumnasthal) at Deoprayag (note 1), where the rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda join (note 2) to form the river Ganga.
NOTE 1: Deoprayag (Deva Prayag) or Devaprayag N30°09': E78°37' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is indicated as Devaprayag in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 11 H2). NOTE 2: The sangam (confluence) of Deoprayag is one of the most sacred tirtha's (literally: ford; a sacred bathing place), second only to Prayag (Allahabad), where the Yamuna, Ganges and Saraswati meet.
