Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 15/05/2016

A »sinkhole« (note 1) or »suffosion subsidendence« of cylindrical shape without recognised dimensions (SHRIKANTIA & BHARGAVA 1972) collapsed in the early hours of 21st November 1970 at the village of »Runjh« (note 2) between »Chhika« (note 3) and »Seri« (note 4), about »10 km« (note 5) south-east of Manali (N32°16': E077°10'). The catastrophic event forming the collapse doline in basic volcanic rocks of Precambrian age ascribe SHRIKANTIA & BHARGAVA (1972) to the solvent action of subsurface water on unspecified »salt« occuring in the subthrust side of the volcanic subnappe with the consequent removal of support affecting the ability of the roof to sustain the lithostatic load.

NOTE 1: The US-American engineering geologist's term "sinkhole" designates any kind of closed depression. In this case, the term sinkhole designates a collapse doline —in English ruckle pot, in French gouffre d'enfondrement, and in German Einruchsdoline. NOTE 2: The »Runjh« of SHRIKANTIA & BHARGAVA (1972) is not identified, unless it corresponds to the »Rumsu« marked near N32°11: E077°11' on AMS sheet NI43-16 Palampur (1963 edition) but not on the Survey of India 1: 250,000 sheet 52-H (1973 edition). NOTE 3: The »Chhika« of SHRIKANTIA & BHARGAVA (1972) is not identified, unless it corresponds to the »Chhaki« marked near N32°07'30”: E077°10' (adjacent north of Nagar) on the Survey of India 1: 250,000 sheet 52-H (1973 edition) and »Chheti« near N32°06': E077°10' (adjacent south of Nagar) on AMS sheet NI43-16 Palampur (1963 edition). NOTE 4: The »Seri« of SHRIKANTIA & BHARGAVA (1972) is not identified, unless it corresponds to the »Sarsei« marked near N32°12': E077°11' (about 2 km north-east of Nagar) on AMS sheet NI43-16 Palampur (1963 edition) but not on the Survey of India 1: 250,000 sheet 52-H (1973 edition). NOTE 5: At a distance of 10 km aproximately south of Manali lies the village of Jagatsukh (N32°11': E077°11') but at a distance of 10 miles (16 km) lie the abovementioned villages of Sarsei, Chhaki / Chheti and Rumsu above the left (eastern) bank of the river Beas (Vyas).
