»Several large rocky caves, which had been widened by pilgrims« are used as hermitage retreats at a certain »Panc'hi Mat'h« (Panch Math, five [small] shrines, temples; Panch Nath, five gods) on one »Ghuràl Gangá« (note 1). Captain Felix V. Raper »marched to Panc'hi Mat'h, Lat. 30° 27' 21” . This village, which has been recently deserted, is situated on the banks of a large stream, called Ghuràl Gangá, which falls into the Alacanandá about a furlong [200 m] below [downstream] … Along the banks of a deep water course, at some distance from the Alacananda [Alaknanda], were several large rocky caves, which had been widened by pilgrims, many of whom had taken up a temporary residence here. Some of these cells were capable of containing one hundred and fifty or two hundred people. To the right was a cascade, falling from the height of sixty or seventy feet [18 m or 21 m]. … 26th. Marched to Salúr [N30°30'30”: E079°31' ±1 km], where we camped near a spring, in a small rice field, about mid-way up the mountain« (RAPER, F V 1810: 514-515; 1812: 514-515).
