Description
An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) is said to give access to a relatively steep, comparatively spacious, and more or less dry stream cave passage which leads after an estimated walking distance of 50 m to a choked dry sink. Assumed was an estimated vertical range of 20 m at a cave passage length of 50 m (Jarratt, Anthony 'Tony' R 1999.02 Mss Cave Log, vol. 7, Meghalaya). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for what outsiders christened with the fictitious (Pseudokhasi) cave name »Krem Cherlamet« (Jarratt, Anthony 'Tony' R 1999). The recorded "cherlamet" (Jarratt, A R 1999.02 Mss) is probably not a place name but rather a translation of the British question »name this settlement ! « into the Khasi words "jer la met" (note 1) or "sher la met" (note 2). SITUATION: About 200 m west of the –>Shanty Shaft (25°11'53”N: 92°21'09”E) and below a relatively large open area on what had been in February 1999 one of the Shaktiman tracks of the Indian subcontinent. CAVE POTENTIAL: Near the back, there may be a couple of difficult to reach ways on in the cave ceiling (Jarratt, A R 1999.02 Mss).
NOTE 1: jer (Khasi; verb, transitive), short for "jer kyrteng" (SINGH, N 1920: 70), to name (SINGH, N 1906: 100; SINGH, N 1920: 334; BLAH, E 2007: 196), christen (SINGH, N 1906: 100). la (Khasi, preposition) is a sign of possessive case. e.g. "u la shem la ka masi" or »the shed of the cow« (SINGH, N 1906: 108). »The preposition "la" gives also the force of the possessive case, e.g. "la ka jong ka jong" (their own)« (GURDON, P R T 1906: 207) ka met (Khasi, noun) a body (SINGH, N 1906: 132; SINGH, N 1920: 49; BLAH, E 2007: 33) in the sense of "ki briew ba ïalang kynhun" (BLAH, E 2007: 33): a group of people collectively (Gebauer, H D 2012.12.20). NOTE 2: sher (Khasi, verb, transitive) to plant in; to ram (SINGH, N 1906: 192); [to] pitch (BLAH, E 2007: 225); set up and fix in a definite position. ka dara sher dara (Khasi, binomial imitative), a camp (BLAH, E 2007: 41); temporarily erected improvised shelters (Gebauer, H D 2012.12.20) from "ka dara" (noun, singular) or "ki dara" (n., plural), a temporary hut, tent, shelter (SINGH, N 1906: 64); hovel (SINGH, N 1920: 226).
