Description
A cave or shelter containing paintings (rock art) is said to be found (or not) at a certain place called »Togalagudda« or, perhaps, Togala Gudda, Togal-e Gudda, Togala Hill (note 1) somewhere in Raichur district (note 2). SITUATION: »Raichur district [note 3] … in the Gulbarga division of Hyderabad State, adjoining Mahbubnagar and Gulbarga, which bound it east and north, and the Madras districts of Bellary and Kurnool in the south, from which it is separated by the Tungabhadra. Before the extensive changes made in 1905, it lay between 15° 50' and 16°54' N. and 76°50' and 78°15' E« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1904-1909, 21: 38, 39-40).
NOTE 1: »Togalagudda« or Togala Gudda, Togal-e Gudda, Togala Hill is not identified as no such hill or place is listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) or in IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 25: 591) and in India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: index). NOTE 2: »Raichur district … In 1905 Yergana was divided between the adjoining taluks of Manvi, Raichur, and Deodrug, and Yagir was transferred to Gulbarga district. On the other hand, Lingusur, Gangawati Kushtagi, and Sindhnur were added to Raichur from the broken-up Lingusur District« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1904-1909, 21: 38, 39-40). NOTE 3: Raichur district, falling on India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) maps 100 and 107) and parts of the AMS sheets NE43-16, ND43-04, ND44-01 and NE44-13, is positioned at N16°05': E77°10' (WGS84) and Raichur town at 16°12'N: 77°22'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NE43-16.
