Description
(Mitabwa, Shaba) Co-ordinates: E 027°10'32”; S 9°9'5”. Alt. 1,050 m. Precambrian limestone. Located in the Upemba national park 10 km NW from Mukama. Situated on the left of the road from Bunkeya towards Mitwaba. Explored in 1957-1958 by the Section Spéléologique Elisabethville and the Spéléo-Club Jadotville (Dumont 1960). The cave is actually an extensive subterranean complex including Grotte de Kiwakishi and the nearby Grotte Casteret. More than 6 km reportedly have been mapped (Buffard 1984). The cave has many dripstone formations and an active level. A biospeleological article was published by Williers (1961). Plan according to Buffard (1984). Anciaux de Faveaux (2002) mentioned a length of over 3 km.
