Description
A man-made troglodyte settlement, actually a bazaar with troglodyte rock chambers excavated from laterite cliffs noticed NEWBOLD, T J (1844b) at »Calliany« (note 1), about 58 km or »36 miles« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 14: 324) in a direct line west of »Beder« (Bidar N17°54': E77°33'). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1844: »Nearer Calliany the bed of laterite gravel is succeeded by laterite, which forms a low ridge of hills immediately to the West of the town. A street has been cut from the rock, running along the side, about midway up the descend, in the scarp of which a long row of now deserted houses and shops have been excavated, and also small caves supported by pillars of the laterite left untouched, while excavating« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 997) CAVE DESCRIPTION 1908: »Numerous ruins of temples, caves, and mosques are to be found near Kalyani, the capital of the Chalukyas, and at the villages of Nilanga, Karusa, Kaulas, Narayampur, Sakol, Siruri, Sitapur, and Tiprath« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 8: 165 on Bidar District). ETYMOLOGY: »The laterite is here called [in Malayalam?] by the natives from its worm-eaten appearance kire ka putthur [kire ka pathar], or silika putthur. The Tamuls call it chori kulloo, vettic and culloo and on the Malabar coast it is termed stika culloo« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 997). CAVE CLIMATE: NEWBOLD, T J (1844b: 997): »The wells here are of considerable depth. The temperature of one, 35 feet [10.7 m] to the surface of the water was 78°5' [Fahrenheit = 25.8°C], temperature of air in the shade 89°« (Fahrenheit = 31.7°C).
