Description
Caves frequented by many wild pigeons (keyword: cave life) reported (BUCHANAN 1807, 2: 135-136) from Pigeon Island (note 1). SITUATION: In the Arabian Sea »off the coast at Murodeshwara temple« (note 2), in the very south of Uttar Kannad (ex- North Kannara district) and at a distance of »five or six leagues [10 or 12 km, actually 17 km west-south-west] from the continent… [The island is] pretty high, with a flat top … called Naytrani … has trees, with a small stream of fresh water, and good landing on its western side.«
NOTE 1: »Pigeon Island« or »Naytrani Guda« (BUCHANAN 1807) is the »Kalar Island« near N14°01': E74°19': 1331 feet = 406 m on AMS sheet ND43-06 (1960 edition) and positioned as »Netrani Island« and »Pigeon Island« at N14°01': E74°19' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). The island is indicated near N14°01': E74°23' on the map accompanying BUCHANAN (1807, 2: 135-136) and shown as a tiny island without name near N13°59': E74°18' on the Survey of India sheet Goa, Daman & Diu and Karnataka (1 : 1 mill State Map series, 1981 edition) and on the AMS sheet ND43-02 Belgaum (1960 edition). NOTE 2: »Murodeshwara« (BUCHANAN 1807) is »Murdeshwar« or »Murdeshwar Island« N14°6': E74°27' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet ND43-06 Karwar (U502 series, 1960 edition) is indicated as »Murodeshvar« in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 105 H5).
