Description
An inhabitable, relatively immense projecting rock gives shelter and protection from sun or rain (HERVEY 1853, 2: 159). ETYMOLOGY: The place has received the name of Kângnee (HERVEY 1853, 2: 160). SITUATION: Kangnee … is not a village but simply a halting place and in June 1851 there had been no village nearer than two or three miles (HERVEY 1853, 2: 159). Nevertheless, this shelter lies above the eastern (orographically left) bank of the Chenab river and six and a half coss short of Kishtawâr (City) (note 1). APPROACH: HERVEY (1853, 2: 156-160) narrates to have -travelled- (read: been carried) on 3rd June, 1851 all the way from Doodha, or Dodha and Doda (note 2) via a place called Mâhul (mahal, Hindi: mansion, residence, palace) and along the banks of the Chundra-Bhâga (Chandra Bhaga a.k.a. Chenab River) and across a fascinating Jhoola or swing-bridge of twigs, four coss from Bursal [note 3] and half-way from Mâhul to Kishtawâr (p. 157) or Jhoola (or Zampa) (p. 158) to the immense prjecting rock (p. 159), which was estimated to lie half-coss from the bridge and six and a half coss short of Kishtawar (City) (p. 160). CAVE DESCRIPTION: An immense projecting rock gives shelter and protection from sun or rain. The people have made additional shade by surrounding the spot with great branches of trees.
