Description
The north-east facing cave entrance to Jakholi Cave (note 1) leads to a solitary, steeply ascending passage, which was understood to be »broader than high« (HODGSON 1971). SITUATION: »In a valley [without recognised name] at the south-eastern end of Arki village« (HODGSON 1971). The position »N. Lat. 31°08.65': E. Long. 76°58'30': 3500 feet« (unspecified geodetic datum Everest 1830, Glennie, E A 1972a Mss) = 31°08'39”N: 76°58'18”E: 1067 m) for the Jakholi cave indicates a spot on a north-east facing hill slope just south of Arki (31°09'N: 76°58'E: 1045 m). CAVE DESCRIPTION: »If I remember, we did not pay to much attention to these caves, as they were very small and mostly horizontal« (John Conway, undated circa 1982.09.15 Mss). »We also found [sic! for: We were shown] four more caves [no names mentioned: Dawaras, Jakholi, Lutru Mahadev Goffar and »Nagdwar« = Matru Mahadev Goffar] in this same valley [no name mentioned: Arki], all 100 to 200 feet [30.5 to 61 m] long« (HALL 1971: 6; cave plan in CHABERT & CONWAY 1972).
NOTE 1: »The Jakholi Temple … [at Arki] is a remarkable architectural specimen -a triple shrine of the 'shikhara' style« (cityguides.indiainfo.com/shimla accessed 29.08.2004).
