Man-made rock chambers at a place called Barik Ab (note 1), which lies somewhere on the Sokta Chenar road (note 2) from Kabul to the Khyber Pass, were used as resting places for travellers (note 3): We halted at a place called Barik Ab, a regular resting place for travellers; there are caves hollowed in the bank [of the river Barik] for their accomodation (VIGNE 1840: 229-230).
