Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

Two unspecified cave entrances (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) give access to a cave passage which drains an underground watercourse from north to south and parallel to the Tyllap River. The lower reaches join a feeder from the west which, according to the recorded GPS readings, coincides with the feeder of the cave on the –>Tyllab, 1st. Harper (undated February 2001 Mss) interpreted the presence of relatively warm water as indicating probably recently from surface (note 1). ETYMOLOGY: No locally known name has been identified for this cave in the valley of the river (known by the Bengali name Sonai in the adjacent North Sylhet subdivision of Bangladesh) flowing past the village of Tyllab and definitely is not a Tyllap River Cave 2 (Boycott, Antony 'Tony' 2002 Mss; Rob Harper 2002 Mss) that drains and carries the flow of this river from an upstream insurgence to a downstream resurgence. SITUATION: About 2 km in direct line approximately north from Tyllap Bazar and at an estimated walking distance of 120 m upstream from the entrance to the above mentioned cave near –>Tyllab, 1st. CAVE DESCRIPTION: No peculiarities whatsoever have been noticed in the face of a relatively obvious cave entrance on an unspecified, so-called right (not the wrong) bank gives access to active oxbow system (sic) parallel to main river. Both entrance passages unite at a T-junction with an active stream: The branch downstream south (2 to 4 m wide, 2.5 to 1 m high, 40 m long) leads to gravel floored chamber (5 m by 5 m wide, 1 m to 0.4 m high) from where a 3 m long flat-out crawl regains the stream in a tube (0.8 m wide, 0.5 m high) which after 5 m enters a level canal passage (2.5 m wide, 3 m high) with another (a third?) cave entrance, which, in cases, is to the left (sic!) and 80 m of wading to a T-junction in a cave passage (8 m wide, 3 m high) where both ways quickly become low wet crawls. One crawl becomes too tiht after 15 m or 20 m and the other becomes uninviting after 40 m. An occasionally well-decorated (speleothems) cave passage (2 m by 3 m) near an unidentified main out of the two or three cave entrances can be followed, passes after approximately 100 m a relatively low duck in an unspecified direction on one or the other self-centred person's lefthand side (sic!), and continues for another 20 m to a point where it divides into three distinct cave passages of which, however, not even one was pushed to a conclusion (after Harper, undated 2001 February Mss; Harper 2002.04.31 Mss -megahlay.doc- # 15). PROSPECTS: In spite of the open leads, Rob Harper declares that prospects of finding unknown passages are nil without diving. A diving spot? CAVE LIFE: Shrimps (Crustacea: conf. Palaemonida), tadpoles, frogs (conf. Anura), and about 3 cm long fish in addition to medium fish 6 cm to 8 cm long (Pisces).ht after 15 m or 20 m and the other becomes uninviting after 40 m.
