Description
NOTE 1: There is one place called Markundi (Markandi?) indicated near N25°01': E080°57' on the Survey of India sheet 63-C (edition 1977) and positioned under the same title Markundi at the same position N25°01': E080°57' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).
A rock shelter or cave containing rock art noted COCKBURN (1899: 94) while discussing the distribution of rock art sites in sandstone rock shelters on the Kaimur range: »… near Markandi [note 1]and Majhgawan in Banda district, after laborious search, I only found two sets of drawings, and the most interesting of these was perfectly inaccessible, as it was on the face of a scarp 100 feet [30 m] high, and the floor had dropped off.« The Markundi shelter (compare –>Majhgawan) is possibly identical with –>Gopit Godowle.
