Description
NOTE 1: Mutang (unidentified precision error) 25°11'00”N: 92°21'20”E (WGS84 modified from 25°11'00”N: 92°21'30”E Everest 1830, RAJA RAO, C S 1981: 75) from "mu" or "moo" (Syntang Khasi), maw (standard Khasi) or rock combined with ka 'tang (Khasi, noun), short for: ka ktang, a pipe (SINGH, N 1906: 218) tang (Khasi, verb) to make a finish of the plaiting of wicker-baskets or nets; to measure or heap up grain as much as a measuring basket can contain and holding one hand to support the grain (SINGH, N 1906: 218) thang" (verb, transitive) to burn (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxiv; SINGH, N 1906: 223; SINGH, N 1920: 56; BLAH, E 2007: 38); to cremate (SINGH, N 1906: 223); deflagrate (SINGH, N 1920: 112).
A south-facing, letterbox-shaped cave entrance (20 m wide, 1 m high) at the base of a cliff gives access to a cave chamber, which descends some 25 m at a slightly inclined angle to an estimated 2 m wide and 8 m deep pitch or shaft in a relatively far corner. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for a cave called after the relatively nearby populated place of Mutang (note 1). SITUATION: The letterbox-shaped cave entrance lies at the base of a cliff (unidentified position) and in an unidentified spatial relation to a populated place called Mutang in the vicinity of spots without any recorded GPS position (Georg Bäumler, Brian D. Kharpran Daly and Spindro Dkhar 1997 February 19 personal communication).
