YAGANTI SECOND RAVINE CAVE (Foote 1884a: 33)

Description
»One or more small caves« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 33) or, more likely, relatively »small« cave entrances give access to unexplored caves of unknown, which »… I was unable to reach for want of a long ladder and because of a large colony of bees that would not be dislodged« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 33). SITUATION: »In the group of high limestone cliffs on the south side of the second ravine north of the south-east corner of the Yegunta plateau [note 1] is a large and deep recess with one or more small caves opening near the top of the cliff« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 33). POSITION: Unidentified. The »south-east corner of the Yegunta plateau« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 33) is probably near (±500 m) N15°20'05”: E078°08'55” (Everest 1830) and the mouth or downstream end of the »second ravine north« (FOOTE 1884a: 33) is shown near N15°20'29”: E078°08'33” (Everest 1830) on the Survey of India sheet 57-i/03 (edition 1983) and about 250 m (or so) in a direct line due north of the –>Yerra Zari Spring. It is, however, difficult to decide if the »south side of the second ravine« refers to the south-facing side (above the north bank of the seasonal stream) or to the southern (north facing) bank of the seasonal streambed in the base of the unidentified »Second Ravine« (no name mentioned). CAVE POTENTIAL: »From the promising look of the place I think it deserves a very careful examination« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 33). TACKLE: A ladder, scaling pole or bolting equipment combined with rope, slings, rock anchors and a hornet-proof coverall are likely to ease preliminary investigation. CAVE LIFE: Unknown but beware of potentially unpleasant cliff bees (Asiatic Giant Honey Bee, Apis dorsata) on the approach.
NOTE 1: »Yegunta plateau« (FOOTE 1884a: 33) appears to refer the area between N15°20': E78°07' (or so) and N15°23': E78°09' (Everest 1830) in the west and south-west of the »Yegunta pagoda« (FOOTE 1884a: 33) or »Yaganti pagoda« (CAMMIADE 1927: 11) indicated as »Sri Yaganta Eshwaram Temple« on the Survey of India toposheet 57-i/03 (edition 1983).

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1884: Robert Bruce FOOTE (1884a: 33) observed and recorded a »large and deep recess with one or more small caves« but could not reach it.
