Description
A south-west facing cave entrance (12 m wide and up to 3.5 m high) in laterite overlooks the adjacent plain (note 1) and leads to a solitary, spacious chamber (almost 15 m wide and up to 4 m high) with a nearly level floor (circa 120 square metre), apparently of sedimentary origin and covered with small, angular stones. SITUATION: Estimated 100 m in a direct line approximately west of the first (big, dark) –>Verna Bhuiyar but about 15 m (or so) higher up or some 50 m in a direct line approximately west of the second –>Verna Bhuiyar and about 8 m (or so) higher up. CULTURAL HISTORY - Human use: Apart from a few sea shells (note 2), there are no obvious human traces visible inside or in front of the daylight-lit cave (shelter), which, if drinking water (now some 500 or 600 m away) were available, would serve sheltering a clan (two or three dozen people) of human dwellers. I find no explanation for a couple of shallow mounds (3 or five), rising near the back walls some 15 or 20 cm above he level floor. Shallow cavities (oblong, ca. 0.8 to 1.1 m across, about 10 cm deep) possibly can be attributed to resting places of animals (bear?). CAVE POTENTIAL: Checking the archaeological potential of the site might be worthwhile.he level floor. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2007.01.25: Thomas Matthalm and H. D. Gebauer, assisted by a motorbike-taxi driver and one Francis (scooter-taxi driver), both engaged at the Verna bus stop, instructed by a locally appearing security guard (or so) in a spotless uniform with generous applications in red and gold on immaculate Kaki coloured cloth, scrambled across the hill-side and through thickets, got attacked by nasty, suicidally inclined red ants, but anyhow found the entrance and the much welcomed shade beyond. Walking into it, the cave turned out to be very big indeed.
