Description
A group of seven (note 1) man-made 'cave temples' (rock temples) called Dhara Lena (Dabar Lena) and Torla Lena. Four of the seven rock-cut chambers (used for religious purposes) are on the north side, and three on the opposite side of a ghat (no name mentioned) that separated --at least in 1876-- the zilla of »Solapur« (Sholapur) from »Haidarabad« (Hyderabad State). They are located at a travelling distances of about 3 km north-east of Dharashiva (Dharasiva) / Osmanabad town (note 1) and 60 km north of Sholapur (N17°40': E75°54'). DESHMUKH (1994, figure 3) gives a monochrome photograph showing a »Pillar showing bad state of preservation, carved out in compact basalt in Jain caves, Osmanabad.«
NOTE 1: BURGESS (1878: 76-80) reports six or seven Jaina temples, BURGESS & FERGUSSON (1880 edited1988: 504) seven Jaina temples, the IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 19: 270) four Jain and three probably Vishnava temples, and MIRASHI (1973: 315-327) four Buddhist temples. DHAVALIKAR (1968 and 1974 for 1970-1971) needs to be checked. NOTE 2: Dharashiva / Dharasiva, also called Osmanabad N18°11': E076°03' (Everest 1830, IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 19: 276), Osmanabad, and Usmanabad N18°10': E76°03' (nima.mil/geonames, accessed 16.11.2003).
