Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 05/04/2016

A relatively »spacious rock shelter« (or a true cave?) with unidentified dimensions contains paintings (rock art) of »neelgai« (note 1), small deer and the human figur of an archer (GUPTA 1984: 203). Compare the –>Kunjvan Shelter.SITUATION (GUPTA 1984: 203): About 2 km north of Panna (N24°43': E080°12') and near one village of »Kunjvan« (note 2) on a certain hill »Majpahar (Majha Pahar)« (note 3).

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 05/04/2016

NOTE 1: The nilgai (neelgai) is an Indian antelope (Boselaphus tragocamelus) »is an inhabitant of open forest more often than grassy plains …« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 1: 235). NOTE 2: »Kunjvan« (GUPTA 1984: 203) is not identified as no such place in the area is shown on AMS sheet NG44-14 Panna (U502 series, 1959 edition) or on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 55 H1). NOTE 3: I cannot identify »Majpahar (Majha Pahar)« (GUPTA 1984: 203) or, perhaps, Big Hill — unless it corresponds to the prominent »Jhirma 1486« (453 m asl) near N24°49': E080°08' on AMS sheet NG44-14 Panna (U502 series, 1959 edition) at a lineaar distance of about 10 km west by north of Panna (N24°43': E080°12').
