Description
Eight painted rock shelters (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1979-80 / 1983: 49). SITUATION: At a hillock near Ramgarha, 28 km south-east of Sagar [23°50'N: 78°45'E] (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1979-80 / 1983: 49). CAVE POTENTIAL -- geology: Saugor District … lying between 23° 9' and 24°27' N. and 78°4' and 78° 22' E. The greater part of the district is covered by Deccan trap; but there are two great inliers of Vindhyan sandstone, one to the north running down nearly as far as Saugor, and the other to the east extending from near Garhakota [23°46'N: 79°09'E] to beyond Surkhi [23°38'N: 78°49'E]. To the east or south-east of Saugor the infra-trappean or Lameta limestone is largly developed. Calcareous infra-trappean bands with fossilized shells and plants also occur largely near Saugor (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 22: 137). CULTURAL HISTORY -- rock art: The paintings show scvenes of horse riders, elephant riders and soldiers fighting with swords and shieds in white and red (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1979-80 / 1983: 49).
