Description
A stooping sized cave entrance gives access to a man-made coal mine, which is characterised by unidentified peculiarities but was found to home bats (Tyler 2001.10.11 Mss). ETYMOLOGY: Tyler (2001.10.11 Mss) called this coal mine Krem poh Shnong Laitryngew as if it were a -Laitryngew village cave- (note 1). SITUATION: This coal mine was understood to lie in the vicinity of Laitryngew (note 2), the village short of (south of) Sohrarim (note 3) on the road from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) generally north towards Shillong, and in a coal mining area that lies either west (Tyler 2001.10.11 Mss) of Laitryngew (Tyler 2001.10.11 Mss) or north of that village (note 4). GEOLOGY: Without any doubt, Tyler's coal mine has been excavated from the coal-bearing Narpuh Sandstone of Upper to Middle Eocene age (Upper Sylhet stage). PRASADA RAO et al. (1965: 49), however, narrate a tale according to which bluish-grey limestone bands can be traced for 150 m with a thickness of 7.6 m somewhere in the vicinity ofMawlong (25°13': 91°42') and Laitryngew (25°20': 91°44'). CAVE CLIMATE: Air temperature 8.1°C (sic! qua: 18.1°C ?) and 89% humidity on 5th January 2001. CAVE LIFE: Bats (Chiroptera: Microchiroptera) Myotis sp. (Tyler 2001.10.11 Mss).A stooping sized cave entrance gives access to a man-made coal mine, which is characterised by unidentified peculiarities but was found to home bats (Tyler 2001.10.11 Mss).
