Description
Man-made troglodyte rock-cut chambers with a fabulous subterranan tunnel: »Near East Nyaungu is the kyaukku, or rock-cut pagoda. … In the cliff under the pagoda are several caves inhabited by pongyis; and near them are the caves of the Hngetpyittaung kyaung, reputed to have been built for Buddhist missionaries from India, and to be connected by an underground passage with the Kyaukku pagoda, more than 1.6 km distant« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 18; 124).
