Description
What appears to represent man-made rock chambers used sepulchral localities (cave burials), which MASSON, C (1842, 3; 1844, 4: 389) reported from a not personally visited site: At Nichara [note 1], in the hills east of Kalat, are a few caves and cave temples. These excavations, the samúches [man-made rock chambers] of Afghanistan… were certainly religious and sepulchral localities, or the abodes of the ascetics connected with them. At Nichara, a few years ago, a proof of their nature was afforded by the accidental discovery of one heretofore closed, in which were found several corpses, according to my informant, arrayed in their habiliments, and extended on cháhárpáhís, or couches (note 2).What appears to represent man-made rock chambers used sepulchral localities (cave burials), which MASSON, C (1842, 3; 1844, 4: 389) reported from a not personally visited site: At Nichara [note 1], in the hills east of Kalat, are a few caves and cave temples.
