Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A boulder floored collapse doline (closed depression, 6 by 8 m wide, 3 m deep) with no ways on, possibly formed by a collapsed chamber. ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -ka bri- is a grove, an estate, a farm and -s'ang- (short for -syang-) means to roast, to toast (SINGH, N 1906: 180, 14). No need to say such a -roasted grove- is a short lived feature: A piece of -jhummed- forest that has been slashed and burned to be cultivated soon —if it is not already cultivated since it was cleared in the last season. SITUATION: At an inexplicable location in one recently (February 2002) -jhumed- (slashed and burned) patches of jungle ready for one or two short lived farming seasonsAPPROACH (after McCullough 2000.02.22 Mss): The cave entrance to the first Krem Brisang in the Wah Ryngo (stream basin) is reached by following the Shaktiman track –a 4WD track or rough fair weather road– which runs from the village of Umthe (note 1) towards the Wah Ryngo (stream). At a point (without position) where the track dvides into two tracks, take the small path left (withouth bearing) in an uphill direction. Traverse small rice field to far left corner, and head left into the jungle. Bye bye! See you again? CAVE DESCRIPTION: Brooks (2000.05.30 Mss) explains how he has … asked Kirsten to clarify whether this site was either a doline or a pot. Knowing Kirsten I suspect it was a 6m x 8m by 3m deep choked pot. The locals certainly were under the impression it was a 'Krem'. A clear definition (from yourself) of the particular characteristics of a doline and a pot, and more importantly how to distinguish between the two would be helpful in resolving this issue and future discrepancies. CAVE POTENTIAL 1: Kirstin McCullough (2000.02.22 Mss) recorded, literally quoted … shallow collapse dolines and short shafts (shakeholes) in the Brisang area is likely to continue for significant distances though one is tempted to presume it is not the area but the shakeholes that may continue.CAVE POTENTIAL 2: Brooks (000.05.30 Mss) was told of shallow collapse dolines and short shafts (shakeholes) in what was a Brisang area in 2000 and proposes none is likely to continue for significant total sums of lengthwise measured metres.000.05.30 Mss) was told of shallow collapse dolines and short shafts (shakeholes) in what was a Brisang area in 2000 and proposes none is likely to continue for significant total sums of lengthwise measured metres.
