An unspecified natural cave (no name mentioned) situated somewhere in Mandi district (note 1) made it to the news (note 2) when people from a village (no name mentioned) killed what journalists called a -leopard- (cheetah?): Villagers kill leopard.- A leopard died of asphyxiation in a Himachal Pradesh village after angry villagers allegedly fanned smoke inside the cave they had chased it into. According to wildlife officials who found the carcass of the leopard in a forest in Mandi district, the animal had died due to inflicted trauma. The leopard had apparently killed a goat that belonged to the villagers. The officials found the carcass of the leopard Thursday, several days after the killing had taken place, a newspaper report said. -We believe angry villagers chased the male leopard after it had killed a goat. They blocked its cave with boulders and then caused it to suffocate with smoke,- said Rajiv Gupta, wildlife official. -After removing its valuable skin, teeth and claws, the arcass was left in the open to rot,- he said. Incidents of confrontation between humans and leopards have grown in recent years in the hill state due to the shrinking habitat of the big cats.arcass was left in the open to rot,- he said.
