BAGESUR HOLES

Probably rather whirlpools in broad daylight than true aphotic caves noticed Captain J. D. Herbert (1791-1835) on occation of the Kumaon survey (1815-1821) at an unidentified spot a few miles above Bagesur (Bageshwar N29°51': E079°46') in the valley of the Surjoo (Sarju) that this place is … remarkable for the deep bed the river has worn in the limestone, hollowing it out into caverns and deep holes, in some of which it has a depth of perhaps 30 feet [about 9 m] or more; although at Bagesur, some miles below this point, it is fordable, being scarcely three feet [less than one metre] in depth. The tendency of this rock to be worn into caverns and hollows is a very curious feature, nor am I aware that any satisfactory explanation has been given of it. The dip at this place was observed to be S. 30° W., and the inclination 52° (HERBERT 1842: cx - cxi). CAVE POTENTIAL: Known from the area within a few kilometres north of Bageshwar (N29°51': E079°46') is not only –> Gori Udyar, Lahrgad but also the –> Balighat Cave and, perhaps, the –> Somwari Cave.
